  1. Spins/Unstability are usually generated by the legwing. Heavy mass of the body in the center, creating the shape of a propellor.

Cutting the armwings away poses several issues:

    - Different 'emergency procedure' for every suit (some dont even have armwing cutaway)

    - Un-even release of armwings (only one side) could make problems worse

    - Armwings are not the cause. Legwing and bad bodyposition are. Fix those. Aside from psycological advantage, no real purpoise to cutting away armwings in freefall. Cutaways are for canopy emergency situations only.

  2. Small secret: There IS no flatspin.

The thing everyone calls 'a flatspin' is actually 'you are not doing the right thing to get stable again' and than putting a horror name onto it.

Its just normal instability, that people dont fix quick enough. Anytime somebody tumbles or spins and doesnt get stable in a second they start crying 'flatspin'

Train acrobatics, train backflying, train loops, train rolls...and you will never call it a flatspin..you will call it 'having fun' :mosking:

  3. In situations where AAD is needed, a Cypres will work (jumper not capable/unconscious) and any wingsuit will fall faster than 78 mph down (activation speed).

In situations where the user WANTS to fool the unit, he or she can fly through activation speed at lower speeds easy. But the reason why AAD is present, is still valid.

In USA a jumper hit the tail of the plane and died 2 years ago. The AAD fired and made for recovery of the body under reserve. Still no difference for the user, but a big difference for the family.

And there have been cypres fires on other wingsuit jumps as well after collisions in Italy.

  4. I am one of the two appointed wingsuit advisors for the IPC Wingsuit workinggroup. And though I can not speak from the chair of IPC, I can tell you what has been done so far.

For a look into some of the developments, you can see some of the documents I proposed here.

Any standard submitted wil also need at least one year of testing, before going into practical application, so by current timeline (and best possible progres) 2013 will see the first possible accepted wingsuit judging standard.

In case not all current problems with various judging systems can be adressed, and a 100% flawless, always correct intepretation of results is possible, longer devlopment could be needed.

If you have input you'd like to see, or idea's on other possible judging methods, or improvements on the document posted here, feel free to email me at jarno@phoenix-fly.com and Ill forward your input to the IPC workgroup.

Like FS and FF, (in my view) records should show the best possible, flown by the best people in the sport, at a high level of exelence that makes us all aspire to and train for.

I think current bigways are a good step in the right direction, but personaly would love to see a record standard be a lot tighter, closer (and probably result in a first 'world record' of a much smaller size).

I would strongly advice against any 'emergency resolutions' and instead trust in the development of a meaningfull, correct and worthy record standard that can stand for years.

That said, I think russia has shown incredible steps the last years in quality of the bigways. Not going bigger and bigger, but instead tighter.

I dont know this years plans, but I would love to see a formation the same size, but trying to fly it even tighter. Striving for exelence, instead of bigger and bigger numbers.

  5. mccordia, so roughly when can I expect my V4 that I ordered in early august? If that's possible to predict at all.

Not too bothered since the weather's shit, but still, would be nice to have an ETA. :)

For the V4 the lead times are on the long side of 5 months. So mid to end February would be the estemate.

If you shoot me an email at jarno@phoenix-fly.com I can check with the factory for a more accurate delivery time.

  6. Это означает: "как повезет" B) Как-то обсуждалось уже. К примеру, мой Ghost3 был заказан в апреле, а пришел в сентябре

Suits order NOW will be delivered in 6 week.

You ordered your suit in APRIL, at which point the order time was around 11 weeks. Sometimes there are a few cases where it takes longer, but usually those are more linked to delays by dealers in between or sizing issues.

Ive personaly handled about 50 orders the last few months, and all delivered to costumers in the time promised.

But perhaps Karma prevents it on some :mosking::lol::D

  7. There is +- a 5,5 week wait from order to when the suit goes into production. Production on a Phantom etc. is spread over +- 3 days. So 6 weeks after receiving the order, the suit is finished, and sent to client.

Postage will take 3 days, to 1,5 week (depending on location, and sometimes costums delay).

The factory closes for a total of 6 days around Xmas, and will be back to work the 2nd of January.

So it should not influence the lead time too long.

  8. A problem with the 'train-test' is the airflow is different than flying.

During normal flight at +- 2.0 glide angle, the wind hits the wingsuit at an angle of +- 22,5 degrees. In the train test the wind is hitting the suit from the front, at 90 degrees. Ask if you can put a small pole on the train-roof to get the correct angle :D

    DSC03020_side.jpg

Sadly this also poses the issue of the pole liiting airflow into the leg-inlet. So more development on the 'bed' is needed.

The picture was just for fun (TV Item about wingsuits, not serious testing)

  9. I flew the Stealth2 on the belly comforably at 50 to 55 km/h avg (several videos showing on my YouTube with speeds). Also backflying, could fly it fully with wings open, and not head-low as suggested. Check at this video at 4:40 - http://vimeo.com/11749837

Inflation in the newer Ghost3 is a lot more solid, but for sure there is also some skill required on the pilot of the suit to fly a suit flat/level on the back, and at good speeds on the belly. A large problem many people have is flying in 'sit' position, with the butt hanging down. This limits clean airflow over the butt, and results in less hard pressurisation on the legwing. Practice, practice :mosking:

Я не знаю, что это значит, правда.

Вообще по головам как-то логичнее, чем впихивать в сетку все тело.

    Nice flying guys!

With the circle system, you can make the circles smaller and smaller, untill they have everyone in (Red=Out).

    Out comes a vallue.

So you can say> we flew this formation with this tollerance level.

If you do another 36 way next year, you can do the same, and compare results and see if one has a higher accuracy (smaller circles) than the other one.

We will also try and see if we can add a measurement unit (say, size of a rig) to get accurate/real distances between flyers measured..

  11. In Schaffen, wingsuit jumper with large surface wingsuit broke his ankle last weekend.

In the exit, he opened up the legwing too soon, and legs got pushed away from under the body, hitting the door frame.

After a doctor visit, the ankle was found broken this morning.

Similar to other exit videos. Beware of the tail. Beware of the door-frame. Beware of your safety and that of everyone still in the plane!

  12. Though fun for long solos, these big suits are very sloppy to fly at their maximum efficiency, and in flocking actually are dificult to fly at speeds better than whats currently the standard.

Seeing videos of people flocking with suits such as venom, xbird etc etc. it usually results in flocks of only 45 to 50 mph. Flying better makes close proximity and manouvering hard to impossible.

I predict the year of dumbing down.

Less focus on skill...more focus on compensation for lack of skill with surface area.. :mosking::lol::D
